Flearning
Introduction
“Flearning” is a blend of the words failure and learning, and it means learning through failure. It’s a mindset and process where mistakes, setbacks, or unsuccessful outcomes are viewed not as endpoints, but as valuable opportunities for growth, reflection and improvement.
Flearning = Failing + Learning
It refers to the process of turning failure into a learning experience; extracting insights from what went wrong and using them to improve performance, innovation or understanding.
• Key Ideas
1. Failure is feedback, not final.
Every failure provides data about what didn’t work and why; it’s a signal for recalibration.
2. Reflection turns failure into flearning.
Without reflection, failure just hurts; with reflection, failure becomes instructional.
3. Flearning builds resilience and innovation.
People and organisations that flearn are better able to adapt, experiment and take intelligent risks.
4. Psychological safety is crucial.
In teams, flearning only happens when people feel safe admitting mistakes without fear of blame or punishment.
The Flearning Cycle
A simple 4-step version:
1. Act (try something new or take a calculated risk.)
2. Fail (something doesn’t go as planned or hoped.)
3. Reflect (ask: What happened? Why? What can we learn?)
4. Adjust (apply the insight and try again.)
Applications
• In organisations: Encourages innovation and continuous improvement by reframing “failures” as experiments.
• In leadership: Helps leaders normalise vulnerability and model a growth mindset.
• In education/training: Teaches learners to iterate and embrace mistakes as part of mastery.
• In change management: Reinforces adaptive learning; every failed initiative provides insights for the next approach.
An Example
A company pilots a new digital tool for remote collaboration. The rollout flops; adoption is low.
Instead of blaming the team, leaders conduct a flearning review:
• Why didn’t it work? (tool too complex, poor onboarding)
• What did we learn? (need clearer communication and training)
• What’s next? (simplify tool, redesign launch plan)
The next rollout succeeds as the failure became a foundation for success.
Connection to Growth Mindset
A growth mindset underpins flearning: people with this mindset see ability as developable and failure as part of the journey. Flearning operationalises that mindset in real contexts.
